Volunteer Opportunities

The St Vincent de Paul Center welcomes “all who wish to serve their neighbors”. Some individuals participate actively in the works of the Center, sharing in a common desire to help their brothers and sisters in need. These activities include:

 Food Pantry

Twice a week volunteers help restock the shelves of the pantry with donations and deliveries from the Licking County Food Pantry Network.  Routinely, we stock Mondays and Thursdays, 1-3 p.m. The pantry is open to clients on Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for food distribution. Volunteers are needed to help with the required paperwork as well as to assist clients when they enter the pantry to select their food items. To volunteer for stocking or serving, please leave a message at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store at 740-349-8425.

 Thrift Store

Assist with sorting and pricing donated items, stocking shelves and racks, and various other inventory operations. This may also include helping with customer checkout.

A need exists for drivers and able bodied individuals to lend their time on Saturdays (usually 3-4 hours) and occasionally evenings during the week to pick up donated items for drop at the Center. Trips may also include delivery to clients or customers of donated or purchased items. To volunteer at the Thrift Store please the Store at 349-8425.

St. Vincent Haven – Homeless Shelter

The St. Vincent Haven offers emergency shelter to men for up to 30 days.  We have been open for only a short while, and already we are running at a filled capacity.  The problem of homelessness is very real in the Newark area.  We hope to later offer homeless shelter for women and families.  Operation of this magnitude requires a lot of people.  From an executive director to the many employees we have just to keep the doors open, we are in constant need of people to help.  Our current need is for volunteers.  We need people to provide foodWe need people to help raise fundsWe need people to just be there during the hours of operation.

Please consider helping is whatever way you feel called to help.  All help is appreciated.  To volunteer, please go to the Haven website - https://svdphaven.org/volunteer/ and fill out the online form.   Please understand that as a volunteer, you are not left in charge of the shelter.  That is what our paid employees are for.  As a volunteer, you are there to “shadow” the employee.  We need at least two people at the shelter at all times.  We can’t afford to pay for two employees on each shift, so we have to rely on volunteers.  If you have worked in the past as a Food Pantry volunteer, you have an idea of what we need.  We mostly need your presence, but we need a lot of people to fill in a schedule that goes from 4:00 P.M until 12 Midnight, seven days a week.  The shifts for this schedule are 4-8 P.M. and 8-12 Midnight.
